Dental Implants at Diamond Smiles Dental
If a missing tooth is affecting your smile, then a dental implant may be the perfect solution for you. Our professional team are highly experienced in implantology and can help you achieve a more beautiful and confident smile in as little as three simple and convenient stages of treatment.
What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant refers to an artificial tooth root which acts as the base for a fixed restoration (such as a crown, bridge, or denture) to be attached to. This artificial ‘root’ is made from a highly durable titanium material which can be likened to a screw. The fixed restoration also acts as an artificial tooth, successfully replacing the gap with a realistic tooth that looks and feels just like your natural teeth.
Dental implants require the same oral hygiene care as natural teeth and allow a patient to eat, drink, brush, and floss as normal. Because we use only the highest quality and most-trusted dental materials, you can expect a dental implant to last a lifetime when cared for properly. Patients with dental implants still require bi-annual preventative check-ups and cleans.
The Dental Implant Procedure
Thanks to modern technological advancements in dentistry, the implant procedure doesn’t require patients to spend hours upon hours in the chair. A beautiful new smile can be achieved within just three simple stages.
- Stage 1: During the first phase, our dentist will surgically place your implant. The implant is then left in place for a period of approximately three months to allow it to successfully fuse (osseointegrate) with the surrounding bone. If the implant site is toward the front of your mouth or is visible when you smile, we may also fit a temporary crown to act as a replacement tooth during this time. Alternatively, if a tooth is extracted in preparation for your dental implant, our team will wait approximately 8 weeks before fitting your implant. This allows the bone to successfully heal before further treatment.
- Stage 2: Once new bone has osseointegrated with your implant to keep it firmly in place, our dentist will begin phase two of treatment. This involves uncovering the internal screw, as well as placing a healing cap over the gum tissue. During this stage, impressions are also taken to begin having the artificial tooth (crown) custom-made at the lab.
- Stage 3: The third and final stage involves fitting the permanent prosthetic (crown, bridge, or denture) to the implant. If a temporary crown was fitted during the initial stage, then this will be replaced with its permanent counterpart.
